Health & Safety Guidelines

Health and safety guidelines for volunteers

At each session you will be told the work we plan to carry out. We aim to have a range of tasks and you decide which you prefer.  Please check that your TETANUS vaccination is up to date and you have your own medicines with you. Be aware of the risk of picking up ‘Toxocara canis’ from dog faeces.

Graveyards have many hazards in the form of pot holes, dips and steps, slippery surfaces. Please wear appropriate clothing, especially sturdy boots with ankle protection. We recommend wearing tough gardening gloves, especially if the task involves work on brambles.  Dumpy bags of waste must not be overfilled. They should be light enough for two people to carry comfortably. Only lift what is comfortable and safe for you.

You will be using your own tools most of the time and we recommend keeping them in good condition. We are NOT allowed to use power or battery driven tools in the graveyard. We do NOT do any work from ladders. Please keep all tools neat and tidy so they are not a trip hazard to the public. You will be covered by BCC 3rd Party Public Liability Insurance when working in the Churchyard.
